What Does "Kohana" Mean?

How did we come up with the name KOHANA for our unscented line of shaving products?

Kohana: Nude, naked, bare.

As I thumbed through the "Fornander Collections of Hawaiian Antiquities and Folklore" I was intrigued when I came across the word 'Kohana', or “naked”.

"The sea for going “naked” is at Mamala."

The brief, the printed story is...

"The natives often traveled along the reef, especially in times of war, to avoid their enemies on the land. Coming to the break in the reef at Mamala, they were obliged to swim across."

Further searching uncovered that the natives often traveled along this reef naked (Kohana). It was then that I knew I had discovered the name for our new unscented post-shave moisturizer. What is good about bay rum?

I use the after shave and skin moisturizer every day. I enjoy the aroma of the bay rum. It reminds me of growing up and going to the barbershop. My skin feels clean and there are no post shave irritation

Decided to give this new scent a try

Decided to give this new scent a try. I find it very pleasing, but the bay rum is overshadowed by the lime and powder scents. It also has a very thick consistency and is a bit difficult to get out of the glass container. I like it, but it's not exactly a bay rum scent.

Disappointed

This after shave balm has a very weak fragrance. Unlike the other balms I have bought from Barberry Coast, im having difficulty with getting it out of the bottle. For me, it's the weak fragrance I like something little stronger but not over powering. The shave also has a weak fragrances, however the tub was 2/3 full if that unlike other shave creams I have had from Barberry Coast. So the Sonoran spice is a disappointment.

Scent perception can vary quite a bit from person to person, but we certainly understand preferring something with a little more presence.

We also wanted to clarify the fill level of the shave cream. We recently changed to a slightly larger jar, so the product may no longer appear as full as it did in our previous packaging. Each jar is still filled with the stated 4 oz of shave cream by weight. If you believe this is not the case with your order we'll make it right. Just let me know.

Weak scent.

I can smell the aftershave in the bottle but when I apply it there isn’t much scent. I thought it was me getting nose blind to the smell but I asked my family if they can smell it and they all said no.

I started buying on the company website last year after I got what I suspected was a counterfeit product on Amazon. The price is also less on the company website. Generally,it takes them two days to process the order (pick it, pack it, invoice and print the label) - so it usually ships the day after you placed your order (48 hours). My orders ship out of the Southwest, I don't know if they have multiple warehouses - but once the product is picked up, I see it two days later. So if I bought it on Monday - I see the product by Friday. I'm good with that timeline - its also why I buy two bottles at a time, so I don't run out.

I love Bay Rum

I love Bay Rum, it is my favorite aftershave, it does not have that weird funky smell that most men's products have. I am not sure what it is, but thank god it does not have it (the stuff that smell like Axe :))

Anyway, this is the best one that I have found, the most traditional that I have found from what I have read on Bay Rum and the formulation has not changed in the 5 years I have been using it - unlike Royal and St. Johns.

It's light, and settles in quickly, you don't have to worry about using too much because it dissipates so nicely. Also, it is much more like a tonic, I don't just but it on my face after a shave - I rub my scalp chest and arms with it - its a great year round scent for a warm climate. In fact, on hot days, a quick splash is refreshing and cooling.

Why more men don't use Bay Rum is beyond me - but that's cool, I like being the guy that women like to smell. I do wish it came in a larger bottle and a travel size bottle would be great as well. You can travel with the 4oz bottle but it is a bit big for a toiletry bag. A two ounce travel size would be great - I'd buy three of four at a time. As it is, I buy two 4oz bottles every time I start to run low.

So, a great product...one of the few branded products I stick with and I hope they never change.

Awesome aftershave

Awesome aftershave especially for the price. It’s definitely not a scent I’ve had in the past so I appreciate how unique it is. I put it in a spray bottle and it works really well. I am experimenting with Bay Rum products

I am experimenting with Bay Rum scented products. I have been using Ogallala Bay Rum soap/shampoo. I purchased so I could carry solid soap and shampoo in carry-on luggage. Then I tried aftershave. I like the soap but not the aftershave.
